Trivandrum

Trivandrum, also known as Thiruvananthapuram, is the capital and largest city in Kerala, India. Trivandrum, dubbed the "Evergreen City of India" by Mahatma Gandhi, is known for its lush green landscapes and rolling hills. The city, built on seven hills along the Arabian Sea coast, has spectacular beautiful views. Trivandrum, the capital of the Travancore kingdom, has a rich historical legacy and has long served as a centre for academic and cultural activities.

The city's notable architectural landmarks include the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, a huge complex devoted to Lord Vishnu. While Kerala is known for its backwaters, Trivandrum attracts visitors with its gorgeous beaches. Kovalam, just 16 kilometres away, is recognized for its gorgeous coastlines, golden sands, swaying palm palms, and relaxing atmosphere.

By Road: Trivandrum is well-connected to other cities and towns in Kerala and neighbouring states by a network of national highways and state roads. National Highway 66 (NH 66) plays a major role in connecting Trivandrum to other parts of Kerala and South India.

Major Attractions of Trivandrum:

Padmanabhaswamy Temple:

The Padmanabhaswamy Temple, a Hindu temple devoted to Vishnu, is located in Trivandrum. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams, or sacred abodes of Vishnu in the Sri Vaishnava religion, and is regarded as one of the most important Vaishnavite pilgrimage destinations in India. Thiruvananthapuram's name means "The City of Ananta" in Malayalam and Tamil. The temple is well-known for its exquisite construction, extensive history, and fabled treasures. The temple is a remarkable example of Kerala-Dravidian architecture, with tall walls, a 16th-century gopuram (gateway tower), and elaborate sculptures. The temple complex also features a wide corridor with 365 and a quarter sculptured granite-stone pillars with intricate embellishments. The temple's main deity is Padmanabhaswamy, a reclining form of Vishnu lying on Ananta, the cosmic serpent. The idol, built of black granite, is thought to represent eternal rest and tranquillity. The Travancore royal family's tutelary god is represented by the temple. The temple's origins are unknown, but it is thought to be hundreds, if not thousands, of years old, with extensive modifications in the 16th and 18th centuries. Dress Code: Devotees to the temple must adhere to a strict dress code. Men are required to wear dhoti (a long white garment) and angavastram (upper cloth), while women should wear sarees or long skirts with kurtas. Nowadays temple authorities allow wearing of dhotis over pants or churidhar to avoid inconvenience to the devotees. Electronic Gadgets are not allowed inside the temple.

Special note: Non-Hindus will not be allowed to enter even inside the temple complex of Padmanabhaswamy temple.

Kuthiramalika Palace:

Kuthiramalika Palace is a home of horses and art that stands tall among the royal buildings near the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. It is an architectural jewel in Trivandrum. This architectural marvel combines history, artistry, and cultural relevance to tell stories of artistic legacy and royal majesty. It was constructed in the 1840s by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma. Kuthiramalika functioned as a shelter for maintaining and promoting South India's rich creative heritage, notably in Kerala. This fascinating moniker is derived from the 122 wonderfully carved wooden horses that adorn the wall brackets supporting the southern roof. Kuthiramalika is now a museum, providing tourists with a glimpse into the lives of the Travancore royal family. The museum displays a collection of exquisite wood carvings, a hallmark of Keralan artistry; paintings depicting scenes from history and mythology that provide a glimpse into the Travancore dynasty's royal life and artistic sensibilities; and royal artefacts that provide insight into the former residents' lives and preferences. Napier Museum:

The Napier Museum is a treasure trove of Kerala's culture and tradition, located in the heart of Trivandrum, just 5 kilometers from Trivandrum Airport and 16 kilometers from Kovalam. Robert Fellowes Chisholm designed this spectacular Indo-Saracenic masterpiece, which features a unique blend of architectural styles such as Indian, Chinese, Kerala, and Mughal influences. It's a treasure trove of ancient antiquities, compelling artworks, and fascinating natural history displays, all housed in a stunning building. It was built in 1880 and named for Lord Napier, the then-Governor of Madras. The museum itself is a masterwork, with a gothic ceiling, minarets, and stunning embellishments. The museum even has a bandstand with hidden speakers for better acoustics!.

Construction began in 1855, and it was eventually open to the public in 1880. The museum itself houses a vast collection of artifacts encompassing art, natural history, archaeology, bronze idols, sculpture, paintings, religious icons, ancient coins, historical documents, decorative items, temple chariots, ivory carving, a 5000-piece coin collection, life-size dioramas showcasing the life and habitat of animals found in Kerala, and everyday objects that tell the story of Kerala and India's rich history.

The museum also houses a natural history section with skeletons of birds and animals, as well as a taxidermy gallery. The Napier Museum complex also includes the Trivandrum Zoo, one of India's oldest zoos, founded in 1857. In addition, there is the Sree Chitra Art Gallery, which was built in 1935. The museum exhibits a well-known collection of paintings by Kerala's famed artist Raja Ravi Varma. The archeological portion houses an intriguing collection of items dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization and the Chola period. Veli Lake and Tourist Village:

Veli Lake and Tourist Village is a famous destination near Trivandrum, approximately 8 kilometers from the airport and 19 kilometers from Kovalam. It's a gorgeous vacation destination noted for its magnificent lagoon, natural surroundings, beaches, recreational activities, and laid-back vibe. Veli Lake, a freshwater lake separated from the Arabian Sea by a thin strip of land, is a nature lover's refuge. It's a beautiful location for boating, with possibilities for pedal boats, rowboats, and speedboats. The lake's calm backwaters provide an excellent opportunity to see native flora and fauna. The lush nature surrounding the lake gives a peaceful respite from the city. It is popular for bird watching, with a wide range of avian life to observe. Veli Tourist Village is located near the mouth of Veli Lake and provides breathtaking views of the water body. The Tourist Village rents pedal boats, rowboats, and speedboats to explore the lake. It has a separate children's park with swings, slides, see-saws, merry-go-rounds, and other play equipment. It's a terrific location for youngsters to run about and burn off their energy. Marine Aquarium Museum Vizhinjam:

The Maritime Aquarium Museum Vizhinjam, also known as the Sagarika Marine Research Aquarium, is located in Vizhinjam, approximately 22 kilometers from Trivandrum Airport and 2 kilometers from Kovalam. It is an excellent spot to see the Arabian Sea's aquatic life. While not a large aquarium, it has a diverse collection of fish, turtles, and other marine species indigenous to the area. The aquarium houses a wide assortment of marine species, such as angelfish, clownfish, seahorses, boxfish, cowfish, butterflyfish, eels, and wrasses. There is even a reef tank with a variety of colorful corals. The aquarium's unique feature is the exhibition of the 'Image Pearl Production' process. This technique includes using a mold put within an oyster to create pearls in specified shapes, and then using shell cement to make the necessary shapes within the mold. The aquarium is tiny but well-maintained, making it an ideal choice for a quick visit. It may be explored in two to three hours.

Sree Chitra Art Gallery:

The Sree Chitra Art Gallery in Trivandrum is a popular location for art lovers, located around 4 kilometers from Trivandrum Airport and 16 kilometers from Kovalam. Established in 1935 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, and initially known as "Sree Chitralayam," it has now become a treasure mine of different artworks. The gallery houses an enormous collection spanning ages, with over 1100 paintings. It features works by some of India's most well-known artists, including Raja Ravi Varma, Nicholas Roerich, Svetoslav Roerich, Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, V. S. Valiathan, C. Raja Raja Varma, and K. C. S. Paniker. The collection includes paintings from diverse Indian styles such as Mughal, Rajput, Tanjore, and Bengal, as well as a large representation of Raja Ravi Varma's vivid representations of Hindu gods and scenes from Indian epics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In addition to paintings, the gallery showcases sculptures and antiques from Kerala's rich cultural past. Special exhibitions are also held on a regular basis, exhibiting modern art and work by visiting artists. The Oriental collection contains Chinese, Japanese, and Balinese paintings; Tibetan Thangka paintings; prehistoric Indian mural paintings; miniatures from all around the world; and mural replicas from Ajanta, Bagh, Sigiriya, and Sittannavasal. The gallery also houses manuscripts with archive interest. The Kerala government is currently creating a new wing to showcase the works of Raja Ravi Varma, his brother C. Sree Chitra Enclaves:

The Sree Chitra Enclave is a museum located 5 miles from Trivandrum Airport and 16 km from Kovalam. The museum honors the memory of Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma (1912-1991), the last king of the former Travancore kingdom. It is housed within the Napier Museum Complex in Trivandrum. It was inaugurated in 1993 and became open to the public in 2007. The museum displays personal goods and antiques from the Travancore Royal Family, highlighting their history and lifestyle. Royal possessions and artifacts—a insight into royal life through goods such as furniture, jewelry, clothes, and even the Maharaja's chariot. Historical papers contain deeds, and ancient newspaper articles give light on the Travancore dynasty's previous occurrences. The Zoological Park:

The Trivandrum Zoological Park, popularly known as the Trivandrum Zoo, is one of India's oldest zoos, located 5 kilometres from Trivandrum Airport and 16 kilometres from Kovalam. It was founded in 1857 and now has over 80 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. The zoo, which covers 55 acres of land, provides a scenic respite within the city limits, with trees, lakes, and lawns. As one of India's first zoos, it has a rich history of animal care and conservation initiatives. While not as vast as some larger zoos, it has a diverse range of fauna, showcasing India's rich biodiversity, and is home to approximately 82 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and more. The zoo is well-kept, with an emphasis on creating a natural home for the animals. It has two lakes that attract approximately 60 different species of birds, both resident and migratory. The zoo provides teaching programs and awareness initiatives about wildlife protection. With its family-friendly ambiance, gardens, meadows, and many animal exhibits, the zoo is an excellent place for families to spend the day outside and learn about wildlife. Lions, tigers, leopards, elephants, monkeys, deer, snakes, crocodiles, and a variety of birds, such as pelicans, hornbills, and parrots, are among the species you might observe.

Kerala State Science and Technology Museum Complex:

The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum Complex is a well-known institution in Trivandrum that was founded in 1984. This museum has ten galleries filled with over 300 exhibits related to various scientific disciplines such as electrical engineering, electronics, automobile engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, mathematics, space science, computer science, solar energy, and popular science. These galleries have interactive exhibits that allow visitors to learn by exploring and experimenting. There are functioning models, demonstrations, and audiovisual presentations to help make science more engaging and accessible to a wider audience. This planetarium features engaging sky displays that allow viewers to discover the wonders of the universe. The planetarium uses a sophisticated digital projection system to create a realistic representation of the night sky. Visitors can take a virtual voyage across the solar system, learn about constellations, and observe astronomical phenomena. Additional features of the Complex Children's Park: This outdoor facility offers a pleasant and interactive environment for youngsters to learn about science while playing. Neyyar Dam:

The Neyyar Dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Trivandrum, located at the foot of the Western Ghats and about 37 kilometers from Trivandrum Airport. It was erected in 1958. The dam serves as both a source of irrigation and a popular picnic site. The dam is a rubble-masonry gravity dam that stands 56 meters tall and measures 295 meters long. The dam generates a picturesque lake, a 106.2 million cubic meter reservoir surrounded by the Western Ghats' southern low hills, that is famous for boating, fishing, and birdwatching. The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, located near the dam, is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, sambar deer, and leopard. There is also a lion safari park and a crocodile farm in the area. It is an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts. There are several types of boats available for hire, including speedboats and safari boats. The crocodile farm is home to a significant number of crocodiles, including mugger and saltwater crocodiles. The aquarium contains a collection of freshwater fish from the Neyyar River. The Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave Temple:

This ancient Hindu temple is located in Vizhinjam, near Trivandrum, and is around 17 kilometers from the city center. It is thought to have been built in the eighth century during the Pallava dynasty's reign. The enormous granite cave houses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinadhara Dakshinamurti, a representation of the Hindu god Shiva as a teacher. The outer wall of the cave features unfinished reliefs of Shiva in various incarnations, including "Tripurantakara" (the destroyer of the three cities) on the left and "Nataraja" (the cosmic dancer) with Parvati (his bride) on the right. The gateway also features unfinished sculptures of guardians (dvarapalakas), which are typical of Pallava art. It is regarded as the earliest rock-cut cave in Kerala and is is protected as a monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.

Azhimala Shiva Temple:

The Azhimala Shiva Temple is a Hindu temple on the Arabian Sea coast, near Vizhinjam. It is approximately 28 kilometres from Trivandrum Airport and 8 km from Kovalam. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and is famous for its 18-meter (58-foot) tall Gangadhareshwara sculpture, the tallest Shiva sculpture in Kerala. The temple is thought to be from the 8th century AD and was built during the Pandya kingdom. It is also recognized as a major hub of Shaivism, a Hindu sect that worships Lord Shiva as the supreme god. However, the most outstanding feature, the Gangadhareshwara statue, was designed by a local artist, P.S. Devadathan, and will be installed in 2021. This huge concrete sculpture shows Lord Shiva as Gangadhareswara, holding the river goddess Ganga in his matted hair. Onam, also known as Kerala's national holiday, is the state's major event, with four days of state vacation from Onam Eve (Uthradom) to Onam Day. Onam is Kerala's largest event, which is observed throughout the state regardless of caste or group. The Onam Carnival is a ten-day festival of Keralan culture and traditions. It takes place in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September) and commemorates the homecoming of a mythological, respectable ruler, ruler Mahabali, whom Keralites still consider to be their king. It gathers people from all across the state together in unified celebrations with a variety of colors and cuisines. Onam's Eve, also known as Uthradom, is a fast-paced day. Onam's Eve is known as Uthradom, and it is a day of frenzied rush for final Onam shopping, known as Uthradom Pachil (Uthradom Rush) in almost every part of the state. Today, it is regarded as the largest urban shopping festival, notably in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode. Homes are adorned with lovely flower carpets (Pookkalam), and traditional handicrafts and pastimes can be seen everywhere. On this occasion, lavish, magnificent feasts (Onasadya) can be made in any home, followed by delectable payasam (a Kerala dessert). This year's celebration runs from September 14th to September 17th.

Navarathri Sangeetholsavam (October):

Venue: Navarathri Mandapam, East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram.

To commemorate the auspicious occasion of Navarathri, the lights shine brightest at Thiruvananthapuram's historic Navarathri Mandapam in the Fort Palace complex. Every year, it hosts the renowned Navarathri Music Festival, a nine-day music extravaganza including some of the most prominent personalities in the classical music world. The main attractions are Swathi Thirunal's exquisite kritis (compositions), a well-known composer and former Travancore ruler. Oil lamps adorn the stage, illuminating the performances in a blaze of grandeur. This year, it takes place from October 3rd to 13th, 24.

Alpasi Utsavam (October / November):

Venue: Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, East Fort, Thiruvananthapuram.

One such spectacular festival is the Alpasi Festival, held in October or November at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram. The primary event is the stunning Aarattu ceremony, in which the deities take a sacred bath in the sea. A large procession begins at the temple and proceeds to Shangumugham Beach, led by the head of the Travancore Royal Family, sword in hand. Caparisoned elephants, mounted police, and columns of armed police can be seen as hundreds of faithful supporters flood the streets to watch this one-of-a-kind and historical event. This year's celebration runs from October 31st to November 9th.

Vettukadu Feast in Trivandrum (November):

Venue: Madre-de-Deus Church in Thiruvananthapuram District.

People from all walks of life visit the 500-year-old Madre-de-Deus Church in Vettukadu, a coastal area of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital city, to worship and spend some quiet time alone. The annual 'Christ the King' Festival, which is supposed to have been attended by the renowned missionary St. Francis Xavier between C.E. 1543 and 1547, is a notable event in the area. It takes place between the 15th and 24th of November.

International Film Festival (December):

Every year, ardent IFFK enthusiasts visit Thiruvananthapuram to enjoy the magic of cinema. The festival, regarded as one of the country's largest cultural events, screens the best films from current international cinema, Indian cinema, and Malayalam cinema in various locations throughout the city. This year's event will take place from December 13th to 20th, 24.

Classical Music Festival (January):

The ten-day Swathi Sangeethotsavam (Swathi Music Festival) commemorates Maharaja Swathi Thirunal's musical works. Kuthiramalika near Trivandrum hosts the festival every year from January 4 to January 13. It is said that the Maharaja wrote many of his compositions there. The event celebrates Swathi Tirunal and is solely dedicated to his musical compositions. The concerts do not require tickets. The Rama Varma Maharaja of Travancore Trust, which is led by Prince Rama Varma, oversees the celebration.

Attukal Pongala Festival (February / March):

The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is well known for its yearly Pongala celebration, which is the world's largest assembly of women for a religious activity, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Over three million women take part in the celebration, preparing a traditional porridge offering for the goddess. The temple hosts a ten-day celebration each year in February or March. The festival's climax is the Pongala rite, in which millions of women gather to cook a sweet rice dish as a sacrifice to the goddess Bhadrakali. Pongala, which translates as "to boil over," is a ritual in which women create delectable payasam, a dessert comprised of cooked rice, coconut, jaggery, and plantains, and deliver it to the Goddess, also known as Bhagavathy. The vast number of ladies clothed in white sarees chanting and preparing the offering is a dramatic and memorable sight. During that time, only women are permitted to enter the temple complex, creating a one-of-a-kind women-centric festival. Men can help prepare the large amounts of food required for the festival.
